Kyokushin Syllabus

Napier, Hastings, Ahuriri Kyokushin Karate follows the Takiwa Branch Syllabus. The syllabus provides a learning road map for all students of all grades. Promotions or gradings are held four times a year at which point students who qualify are given the opportunity to attempt a grading.

Qualification to grade is based on the following:

  1. Time spent on each level (typically a minimum of 3-6 months from 10th to 5th Kyu, 6 months 5th to 3rd Kyu and 1-2 years on 2nd and 1st Kyu)

  2. Achieving a minimum 80% attendance from the previous grading (a minimum of 100% attendance is required from 4th Kyu - green belt and above)

  3. Competence in all aspects of the syllabus for the level required.

The syllabus includes the following:

  • Junbi Undo (formal warm up - brown applicants must be able to take formal warm up in front of class from brown belt onwards)

  • Kihon (basic strikes, kicks and thrusts, brown belt applicants must be able to instruct class in these areas)

  • Ido Geiko (moving techniques - typically 5 different techniques per belt)

  • Ippon (one step fighting drills - typically 3 different techniques per belt from green belt onwards)

  • Goshin Jitsu (self defence - typically 2 different techniques per belt from white belt onwards)

  • Kumite (proficiency in fighting for the level required - some tournament experience required)

  • Kata (all Kyokushin Kata as per Honbu Japan Instruction). The following minimums are required at each level:

In addition to the above Kyu grade syllabus, Black Belt candidates must also learn the Black Belt syllabus.

The higher the grade, the more competent and proficient the student needs to be in order to progress. Also, it is expected that higher grade students participate in all dojo and branch activities; there is a direct relationship between regular participation and promotion.

All students progress at their own pace, promotions are not given until such time a student meets the minimum criteria above.
