Fight Quest - Kyokushin on Discovery Channel

A blend of cultural immersion and good old-fashioned smackdown, the series follows seasoned mixed martial arts fighter Jimmy Smith and 25-year-old rookie Doug Anderson as they travel the globe, adding fight styles from Kali to kickboxing to their repertoire.

In the Japan episode, Doug and Jimmy train for a five man kumite (five one minute full contact rounds) after five days of training under the guidance of two top Kyokushin Karate instructors. Some of the IKO figures featuring on the show are presented below:

Matsui Kancho: Head of the International Karate Organisation Kyokushinkaikan (IKO). Matsui Kancho welcomes Doug and Jimmy and explains their five days of training with Goda and Fukoda Shihans after which they will fight five full contact rounds with top Kyokushin fighters.
Goda Shihan: International Committee Member. Trains Jimmy in his Tokyo dojo. He introduces him to tile, board and baseball bat breaking and the delights of full contact, no protective gear, bare knuckle, knock down fighting. The occasional use of conditioning with the shinai is also introduced along with a very hot currie!
Fukoda Shihan: Doug has the pleasure of training with Fukoda Shihan. Any Kyokushin practitioner can empathise with Doug as he receives "the worst beating" he's had in his life. Doug only manages to complete three of his five days training having been knocked out cold and had his thigh pulverised by 20+ Gedan Mawashi Geris leaving him with the famous "Kyokushin Shuffle" (limp).

The episode aired on New Zealand's Discovery Channel at 9.30pm Tuesday 1st July 2008. The complete episode (in six parts) can be viewed on Youtube at the following locations:
